Markus Varesvuo - Bearded Reedling at Sunset

It’s been a good five years since the last time I stood on the frozen sea outside Espoo, Helsinki’s neighbouring town, to photograph Bearded Reedlings in a reedbed.

Without the frozen conditions, it’s very difficult to get to photograph these small beautiful birds; they spend most of their time in amongst the reeds.

Now we had the most glorious winter for a full week; cold down to -15°C and -20°C, nice clear skies and lovely sunshine, with one grey day of flurry snowfall. Even got some shots with the moon. Lots of fun from sunrise to sunset!

A handsome male Bearded Reedling set against the setting sun.
