Alex Mustard - Jewel Anemone Fluorescence

This is a photo of the fluorescent pigments in tiny jewel anemones (Corynactis viridis) in the sea off Plymouth, England. Usually in photography we photograph reflected light, but in fluorescence photography we are shooting emitted light, that has been excited by light of one wavelength and is given off by the fluorescence pigments at another wavelength. I used blue/UV filters on my flash guns to excite this fluorescence and then a yellow filter on my lens to block the blue light from my flashes from my sensor - the result is that we only see the colourful fluorescent light. Which helps these anemones look beautiful as they were living on a muddy brown seabed!
