When I found this arctic tern's nest on the beach, there were 2 eggs in it. Few days later in the late evening, when I went back to the nest (with Sven, who was visiting me that day), it was empty but there was a small sand mound next to the nest. There were also some human and dog tracks around. I don't know why, but we dug into the mound and found one egg broken and one egg intact. So we put the intact egg back to the cavity that was used as nest before. Sven drove home, I spent the night on the beach. And somewhere at 2 am mother was on the nest again. This pic is taken about 2 weeks after that, the chick under mother's wing was hatched from the same egg we put back to the nest.
