Alex Mustard - Tiny Dancer

Alex Mustard - Tiny Dancer

A portrait of a very small amphipod (Iphimedia obesa), which is approximately 8mm long (smaller still when photographed from the front like this), on top of a colony of deadman's fingers (Alcyonium digitatum, a type of soft coral).

Not many people have seen these tiny, but beautiful crustaceans which live in the cooler waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. This was a challenging photo to take as these bugs don't sit still for long and I was working at high magnification (while diving in a cold, dark fjord in Scotland), but I enjoyed every second of it!

I was using a +10 dioptre lens in addition to the EXIF info below, the lens was locked on minimum focus.

Location: Scotland, UK
