Bruno D'Amicis - Evening deer

This is a picture I have taken on a summer evening of 2007. I remember I had just arrived that day on the upper end of the Valley Tichá of Northern Slovakia after some long hours of hiking. I was together with my friends Erik and Robo; we made camp in the forest; we hate an early dinner of bread and cheese and then sat on an overlook point to check a mountain stream, in the hope bears or wolves would show up. Many unrelenting, tiny flies were painfully sucking our blood, so we had to cover ourselves completely, wearing gloves and socks over our trousers to protect ourselves. At the end of the day, only a small herd of "bachelor" deer passed by and in the fading light I could photograph this young one, as it fed while moving through a thicket of butterburs. I remember how marvelously its red coat contrasted against the lush vegetation. The time for a couple of frames and it disappeared. So ended that day, the very first of a three year-long project, which would have taken me many more times to the wilderness of Tichá. And it left me with one of my favourite pictures ever and unforgettable memories.
