Alex Mustard - The Emperor’s New Clothes

Detail of the pattern of an adult emperor angelfish (Pomacanthus imperator). Tulamben, Bali, Indonesia. Java Sea.

Emperor Angelfish are one of the classic reef fish. Even if you don’t know them by name I am sure you will have seen photos of them at some time. Their coloration, including their yellow stripes on their blue body is beautiful. Angelfish are very territorial and you can clearly hear the large males grunting when others enter their patch. To avoid incurring the wrath of their elders, juvenile Emperor angelfish have a completely different coloration of concentric white rings on a black background, changing their clothes as they grow.
