Alex Mustard - Turtle Silhouette

Alex Mustard - Turtle Silhouette

A silhouette of a large male hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), Boo West, Misool, Raja Ampat, West Papua, Indonesia.

Silhouettes are always useful images to take as a photographer. Often on their own they can feel a little empty, leaving the viewer wanting to see more, but used in a series of images (in exhibition, slideshow or magazine) they can be very powerful. Designers always like them because of their clean lines and monochromatic nature inviting text to be laid on top of them. Not the purest way of thinking about nature photography, but tends to help balance the books!

Silhouettes work best with species with very recognisable shapes, and turtles certainly qualify. The long tail of this individual shows it is a male.
