Alex Mustard - Wise Old Head

A large male hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) swims in open water above a coral reef. As sometimes happens, this large turtle was fascinated by the dome port on the front of my underwater housing. We think that they confuse them with jellyfish, which are a similar shape, size and colour. Anyway he was chasing after it and trying to eat my camera. I didn’t want him to scratch the optical glass of my dome port, but I did let him chew on the neoprene covers on my flashes!

Ironically turtles are one of the few animals that could probably handle eating a glass dome, as one of their favourite foods, sponges, are filled with tiny silica spicules, like tiny shards of glass. In fact we’re not sure exactly how turtles are able to stomach such an unpalatable meal!
