Pygmy seahorses are amazing little creatures. Barely bigger than a coral polyp they live out their lives hidden amongst the branches of sea fans, the bumps on their body acting to disguise them amongst the bumpy branches. It is only when the true colours are revealed with a burst of flash that they stand out a little. Here I also placed a strobe behind the fan to give some backlight to pick out the bristly nature of the polyps.

Pygmy seahorses are much smaller than everyone expects. Much smaller than the nail of your little finger. But finding them, deep underwater, is addictive.
