Alex Mustard - Hair Ball

Hair! It is not something that you usually associate with fish. I guess that is why it makes for such an excellent disguise for this striated frogfish. In fact there is very little about this frogfish that says fish and that all goes into making it a very effective ambush predator. Although with carefully aimed backlighting I have made this fish pop from its background, without my strobes it was very well disguised amongst the algae covered rocks.

This striated frogfish had one further weapon: a lure shaped like a worm that it waggled through the water to attract prey. This large individual was probably female.
