Zoltán Gergely Nagy - Star of the reeds

Zoltán Gergely Nagy - Star of the reeds

For me bitterns are the ultimate in wetland camouflage and secrecy. Their crepuscular habits, special feather patterns and the tendency to hide instead of flying, make them quite hard to spot. Their characteristic deep vocalizations can often be heard though, so one knows they are present. I was in a camouflaged tent waiting for plovers and sandpipers to edge closer to me while feeding, when this bird came out of the reeds on my left and crossed in front of me. A wonderful chance encounter with a true star of the wetlands.
