Niall Benvie - Harlequin ducks, River Laxa, Iceland

It’s funny how photographs that you saw early in your photographic life stay in your mind over the years. One of the books that had most influence on me in the early 1990s was Tom Mangelsen’s Images of Nature. While the pictures may look a little dated now, they had an authenticity that was often lacking in American nature photography at that time.

One photograph that followed me was of a group of harlequin ducks on a overgrown river bank, taken on Vancouver Island. I loved how the extravagance of the drake’s plumage contrasted with the tranquility of the setting. And so it was, while leading a photo tour in Iceland with Charlotte this June, that I felt I’d somehow completed a circle.
