Markus Varesvuo - A Rare Visitor

The tiny, beautiful Azure Tit (Parus cyanus/Cyanistes cyanus) is very rarely seen in Finland or anywhere west of Finland, at least until you hit the western Pacific coast again. They are not migratory birds, but every once in a while some fly out, beyond their range, exploring new frontiers.

This individual found its way to Helsinki in early December and has stayed with us through the New Year. Wouldn’t it be nice if by spring it found a partner and set up house here?

After all, colourwise it could be nominated as our national bird.
