Alex Mustard - King Of The Forest
A friend of mine is currently shooting in the seas of Tasmania and I am most jealous. I visited a few years ago, just for a few days, but would love to return. We all have destinations like that, usually as far away from home as Tasmania is for me.
This photo shows a male weedy seadragon (Phyllopteryx taeniolatus) in a giant kelp forest (Macrocystis pyrifera). Both are a rare sight. Weedy seadragons vary greatly in colour across their range, this particularly colourful individual is typical on Tasmania. Tasmania is also the only part of Australia with giant kelp forests. The kelp is a variety of the same species found on the other side of the Pacific Ocean in California. But in Tasmania there has been a huge loss of this habitat. So this photo of the king in his forest is becoming increasingly rare.
Location: Fortescue Bay, Tasmania, Australia. Tasman Sea.
