Markus Varesvuo - Black Woodpecker in Taiga Forest

I captured this woodpecker while visiting a unique location for photographing birds, set up by Finland’s grand old man of nature photography, Hannu Hautala. Sunlight fell on the bird from behind as well as by reflecting on it off the snow banks below it. Meanwhile the opposite hillside turned bluish in shadow, the whole glory coated in snow and adorned by the handsome Black Woodpecker.
