The Belle Époque wasn’t so “belle” for herons and egrets. They were hunted to the brink of extinction because of the ornamental feathers they wear when in breeding plumage. These feathers were used as fascinators for the fashion-conscious ladies of this era. Well, the term “fashion victim” gets a completely new meaning in this context…
