Werner Bollmann - Why Africa?

Whereas most Eurasian wader species spend the winter season at the coastlines of Africa or India the Purple Sandpiper prefers to stay pretty far north. Even during the coldest time of the year you can find small flocks of these inconspicuous birds feeding on the shores of the Varanger Peninsula or the Lofoten – a little hint of life on the deserted wintery beaches of the north.
