Bird songs in early spring announce the end of winter silence in the boreal forests. One of the birds I often heard, but always missed to see is the pigmy owl, Europe’s smallest owl. On an unforgettable April evening in the Tatra mountains of Slovakia we could locate this little gem of the forest and spend some time in its company. It would perch and sing on very photogenic settings. But one of my favorite shots from that time is when the bird perched on the tiny tip of a nearby spruce tree.
