Alex Mustard - The Good Father

Male yellow-headed jawfish care for their eggs by mouth brooding them until they are ready to hatch, retreating back into their burrows should danger approach. When incubating a clutch of eggs, the male will periodically spit them out slightly and churn them to aerate the eggs, which is what is happening here.

I used a longer lens than I normally would for underwater photography to get an image of the male free swimming with the eggs. Some people do not believe that they will churn their eggs while free swimming because most photos show the males with eggs when they have half retreated back inside their burrows.

Location: Cayman Islands, Caribbean Sea.
