Bruno D'Amicis - The fallen king
Beginning of autumn is deer time here in the mountains of Central Italy, as in many other places in Europe. Large red deer stags, in fact, compete restlessly one against each-other for the supremacy over an harem of females. The rut takes place during a time span of two-three weeks at the end of September. Their rut is spectacular, with males bellowing throughout the whole day and, sometimes, battling with their antlers head-to-head. One of these early October days, I have paid a last visit to a “lek” not far from where I live, just to observe that the deer mating season was coming to its end and just a few animals were still on stage. Like a fallen king, one solitary stag, tired and torn from the fatigues of the past weeks, moved down from the arena and casted its silhouette against the spectacular landscape.
