Oriol Alamany - SPIDER ON RED
An splash of color after so many white pictures in the recent days. In the last year I have been working in a book about Collserola Natural Park. In this mediterranean sierra there is one very curious place with a small pond filled by the ferruginous water coming from an old mine. A very cloudy afternoon I was taking pictures of that pond. Shot after shot I started to work more an more close to the reeds, with the water appearing only as a red out of focus background. The polarizer filter make the red color gorgeous. Suddenly I discovered this tiny spider, the subject I needed to put a point of interest in the composition. A few shots later a big rainstorm fall over me and my camera!

So the color of the water is appearing red by the "dissolved" rust or is the also any bacteria or algae in the water?

Difficult for me to explain in english a geological phenomenon: The rain water filters through the rocks of the old mine, becomes acid and dissolve the metals from the rock.
The acidic water finally arrives at these ponds. The iron disolved precipites and gives this ochre to red color to the pond.
