Jaak Põder - Horse fly

It’s a pretty nice feeling during a hot summer morning in the forest to realize that there are no blood-thirsty flies around because you have a silent… no, a humming protector that is chasing others away and is not interested in biting your flesh. Of course, this doesn’t mean there is pity or affection or such behind it — it just means you are in its territory.

good framing and focus... I like the colour contrast between the background and the horse fly.

Great shot with the wing blur and dark background. I wonder if the glow through its body means its stomach is empty? :)

I'm curious too about Sven's question...

Hehe, yeah, piece of meat would block that glow... :-) More seriously, it looks like this is a male and they do not drink blood, they feed on nectar and pollen. So my guess is its stomach full as there is no better time for flowers than now.

Lucky shot or tried to shoot them?

@Janar -- Not much luck involved, this was a thought out shot. The only lucky part is that I noticed the fly in the constant hum of other flies and mosquitoes and birds singing. But then again, when you have your 'macro eye' open, it's pretty hard to miss these things -- you might miss a moose (which I have done :-P) or a bear but not flies or other bugs.
