Roy Mangersnes - Great Grey Owl

There is something about owls – their face. When it looks at you it is like they are looking right through you. This particular bird came in really close, but I also wanted to make an image showing the habitat of this forest dweller. I used a shorter lens to frame the bird against the dark forest, with only remains of snow still on the branches. After a while the bird gave me the look from the dark forest, and it was like he was looking right through me.

I think the reason people love owls so much is twofold. First is definately their appearance and especially their smart looking face. The second reason in my opinion is their lifestyle, which is much more concealed compared to other birds. People love mysteries. And in owls we have a mysterious bird, which looks like it knows all the secrets to woodland life. Perfect! And a great photo of such a bird perching on the edge of our everyday world and behind it lies its home - a dark and mysterious forest.
